American Shakespeare Center Tour @ Various Locations Across the U.S.

The American Shakespeare Center, one of America’s premiere Shakespeare theaters, is taking its Hungry Hearts Tour on the road from mid-January through the end of March.  Its productions of Romeo and Juliet, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, and Our Town by Thornton Wilder will be performed at selected locations in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio, Alabama, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa.  Check the tour schedule for performance dates and locations.

After the tour, the company will return to its home at the Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton, Virginia for the Center’s spring season, which runs from mid-April to mid-June.  In addition to Romeo and Juliet, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, and Our Town, the spring season will also include a production of Goodnight Desdemona, Good Morning Juliet.

The American Shakespeare Center is dedicated to staging productions of Shakespeare’s works under their original conditions, with limited sets and house lighting, in order to focus on the beauty of the language in the plays.  The 300-seat Blackfriars Playhouse is a historically significant replica of the Blackfriars Theatre in London, which was the first indoor theater in the Western world.  It was built on the site of the Blackfriars Dominican Priory in the late 1500s by the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, whose members included William Shakespeare.  The theater remained in use until the start of the English Civil War in 1642.
