Traditional British Pantomime in the U.S. @ Kensington Town Hall

British pantomime is a much-loved Christmas tradition in the UK, but it’s hard to find a production in the U.S.  Luckily Anglophiles in America can count on The British Players annual pantomime for a dose of family-friendly mayhem and laughs.  The troupe has been bringing an annual slate of high-quality, traditional British theater to the Washington, DC-area since 1964.  Its annual pantomime is a highly anticipated treat.

British pantomimes are typically based on fairy tales, but don’t expect a standard re-telling of a familiar story.  This year, The British Players are putting on a production of Merlin.  According to the press release, “Madcap wizard Merlin and his apprentice Harry are the magicians in this magical Arthurian-style romp.  Can Merlin and Harry thwart evil Ravenclaw’s plans to kidnap King Arthur’s daughter, Princess Avaline?  Will Dame Henrietta Cupcake get a knight to remember?  There’s plenty of fun and comedy in this traditional family panto.”

Come prepared to cheer for the hero and boo at the villain in classic British pantomime style!  Performances take place on December 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, and 11, with matinees on selected dates.  All performances are held at the Kensington Town Hall in Kensington, Maryland, near Washington, DC.  Tickets are sure to sell out, so order early.
