Fashionable Likeness, an Exhibit of 18th-Century British Portraits @ Getty Center

The Getty Center in Los Angles (part of the J. Paul Getty Museum) hosts the exhibit “Fashionable Likeness: Pastel Portraits in 18th-Century Britain” through May 7, 2017.  The exhibit showcases British portraits done using pastels, a medium that expanded in popularity during the 1700s.  Pastels were perfectly suited to capture the elaborate hairstyles and clothing of the period, and were less costly to commission than oil paintings.  This made the medium very popular with a growing population of newly rich, who were anxious to commission portraits to demonstrate their new-found wealth.  The Getty Center is a treasure trove of European art, sculpture, and decorative arts from medieval times to the present.  The exhibit features works from the museum’s extensive collection and rarely-seen pieces loaned by private collectors.  Admission is free, however there is a charge for parking.
