Largest Exhibit of Shakespeare's First Folios Ever Held @ Folger Shakespeare Library

The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC presents First Folio! Shakespeare’s American Tour from November 19, 2016 – January 22, 2017.  This exhibit gives Anglophiles in America the unique opportunity to see the largest display of Shakespeare’s First Folios ever exhibited at one time.

The First Folio, published in 1623, is the first edition of Shakespeare’s collected works.  Without it, some of his best known works would almost certainly have been lost.  This includes favorites such as Macbeth and As You Like It.

About 750 copies of Shakespeare’s First Folio were printed, and approximately 234 are still known to exist.  The Folger Shakespeare Library owns 82 of them, making it the largest collection of First Folios in the world, but the library usually displays only one of its Folios for visitors.  The others are used for scholarly research.

In honor of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death in 2016, the Folger exhibited First Folios in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.  First Folio! Shakespeare’s American Tour displays all eighteen of these travelling First Folios and shares stories from their travels across the country during that very special tour.

This is a must-see exhibit for Anglophiles who will be in the Washington, DC area in the next two months.  There may never again be an opportunity to see so many of Shakespeare’s First Folios at one time.
